Question:

I am going to build a white pine log home. A local HVAC contractor advised a system that includes humidity control. If this is addressed from time of build, will it help keep the integrity of log and wood materials? Is this a wise investment or wasted money? What humidity level is ideal?

Answer:

I'm not sure how it will help the integrity of the logs, but it will be helpful in the winter when it is so dry. I would not recommend using White Pine since it is very susceptible to rot. Red Pine is a better choice. What ever material you build with you should definitely apply a good borate treatment before staining. Shell Guard from Perma Chink is what I would recommend.
