Question:

we are looking at a 70 year old verticle log cabin in MI on a little stream. Please tell me a bit about the history of verticle log cabins.

Answer:

Back in the 40s thru 60s there was a log home company selling log kits. They were the vertical log system. I have one also that I purchased and love it. I have caulked the logs from the exterior and heat the house year round. Sometimes the base of the logs deteriorate and there may be some replacement of logs needed. You really need a rain cutter system to protect the logs around the bottom since it is very difficult to replace vertical logs.

Have fun and enjoy!

I have a small 20x24 vertical log cabin that is 50+ years old. It has severe problems at the base of the logs. The logs themselves are not too bad but the floor extends out under them to the edge of the logs and the end of the floor boards have rotted leaving no support in some areas for the logs. Any tips for repairing this will be appreciated. Thanks, John
